If ever there was the slightest doubt that Mark Foley is, and has probably always been, a liberal Democrat at heart, that doubt should be forever dispelled as a result of an announcement made by David Roth, attorney for the disgraced Foley. (1)
To begin with, Roth announced that as a teenager Foley was himself molested by an unidentified member of the Catholic clergy. Roth denied that the former Congressman was using his own abuse as an excuse for exchanging sexually explicit communications with underage pages.
That being the case, why was it even mentioned?
Indeed, if Foley were not really attempting to gain public sympathy or to establish a legal defense by mentioning abuses that allegedly took place nearly 40 years ago, why would he muddy the waters by having his attorney release irrelevant, non-material information?
Or is creating muddy water Roth’s most vital job responsibility, given the deep do-do Foley finds himself stuck in?
Later in his announcement, Roth worked to clarify Foley’s sexuality for the two or three people in the universe who are not sure. "Mark Foley wants you to know he is a gay man," Roth told reporters, in what ranks as one of the most obvious, unneeded explanations ever composed by an attorney. Roth added that Foley disclosed his homosexuality as a part of his "recovery.”
Only in America could a practicing pedophile serve as chairman of a Congressional caucus on missing and exploited children, and be made
to sound like an innocent victim in need of “recovery” by an attorney billing his client $300 or more an hour!
