Harry Reid Peddling White Flags and Loss of Hope

by John W.Lillpop

Islamofascists all over the globe have been gifted with terrific news (from their perspective) about the Iraq theater of the war on terror by a leading Democrat in the United States government.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid extended a white flag of surrender to all enemies of the United States, current and future, with the following pathetic public comment:

"I believe ... that this war is lost, and this surge is not accomplishing anything, as is shown by the extreme violence in Iraq this week," Reid told journalists.

Ever since the Vietnam War, Democrats have been perceived as weak on defense, anti-war, and of dubious patriotism.

With his remarks, Senator Reid has dragged the party image down even further: It is now officially the party of wimps and girly men waving white flags while in full retreat.

Undermining public confidence in President Bush is bad enough, but Reid has delivered a critical blow to the confidence and sense of purpose to those brave men and women in harm's way in Iraq.

Imagine being 19 years old and about to deploy to Iraq. You volunteered to put your life at risk because of love of country and your commitment to the principles of liberty and democracy.

In your mind, it is worth it because terrorism is an evil force that must be defeated in order to assure that freedoms are available for future generations.

You understand that America is at war not by choice, but because we were attacked by the enemy on our soil on September 11, 2001.

Then you learn that the most powerful person in the U.S. Senate has declared that the war that you are being sent to fight has already been "lost," and that the surge is not accomplishing anything.

The next logical question likely to flow into the mind of a patriotic 19-year-old would be: If this war is already lost, why am I being sent into harm's way?

That doubt, courtesy of Harry Reid, could have a devastating impact on the health and safety of our brave heroes on the ground in Iraq.

Thanks for exactly nothing, Harry Reid!
